Experience Summers that Change Lives
Talisman summer programs offer camps for children ages 8 to 17 with LD, ADD and ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, and high functioning autism. Talisman has been offering such experiences since 1980 and is ACA accredited.
ADHD/Learning Differences Kids with ADHD or learning differences have a range of options at Talisman. Our youngest campers can get their first camp experience in Discovery. Base Camp and Academics provide campus-based adventures, while Junior Trek and the Teen Adventures offer wilderness challenges. In all programs, we focus on the areas of social interaction, organization, and personal responsibility, while building their self-confidence and giving them an unforgettable summer!
Aspergers/Autism The young person with Aspergers, high-functioning autism, and related diagnoses such as PDD (Pervasive Developmental Delay) and NLD (Nonverbal Learning Disability), has many programs to choose from at Talisman. The younger camper can experience typical camp life in Sight or Academics. Teenagers may choose from any of our integrated teen programs or Insight, which is specifically for teens with Aspergers. In all of them, we focus on providing positive new experiences and teaching the social integration skills that will allow them to build lasting friendships.
Academics Academics, for middle school students (ages 11-14), is designed to teach methods of learning, increase and teach proper study skills for the individual child and boost self-esteem for those learners who are struggling in the typical school setting. An experienced teacher will use an outdoor education project as the catalyst for learning the skills for classroom success.
Teen Adventures Our teen programs offer a variety of wilderness experiences for young people (14-17) with ADHD, LD's, Aspergers, or high-functioning autism. Each program is designed to gradually build comfort and abilities in the outdoors while encouraging growth in key areas that are vital to the transition to adulthood. The challenges presented daily naturally provide lessons in good judgment and decision-making, personal responsibility, group- and self-reliance, an improved self-concept. "She has learned some good techniques for dealing with her anger and reframing responses in a respectful way" - Base Camp parent
"It finally hit him that he is not alone in his struggles. He came away making new friends who he truly could relate to" - Sight parent
"We were thrilled to find a camp that understood and appreciated (my son's) specific challenges. He came home from his camping experience feeling confident in his ability to make friends on his own. He feels strongly about the skills he learned at camp and can't wait to go back. As a parent, I can't say enough about the staff at Talisman. They were outstanding! They were very supportive of a nervous child and a nervous mom testing the waters of independence for the first time." - parent of first-time Sight camper
