Our Philosophy Syracuse
University began its
Summer
College for academically talented high school students in 1961 to offer teenagers the opportunity to start college study early and to test career interests firsthand before making crucial decisions about the future.
Summer
College students choose one of eleven programs and attend college-level, credit-bearing pre-professional and academic courses. They live the life of a college student—on campus in a regular residence hall, sharing experiences and living space with other high school students from a variety of backgrounds.
Program Offerings The 2007 credit-bearing curriculum options include acting and musical theatre, architecture, engineering and computer science, fashion and textile design, forensic science, interior and environmental design, law, liberal arts, management, public communications, and theatre production. Many programs include a liberal arts course; students choose two classes from a wide variety of course offerings and earn 6 or 7 credits. Credits earned through

Syracuse
University and most other colleges and universities upon matriculation and credit-transfer request. It is the student’s college of matriculation that determines credit transfer. The typical class meets for six weeks, Monday through Thursday (plus Friday in some programs) for four to six hours per day, depending on the program. Students participate in field trips and campus activities. Supervised residence hall living includes special weekend events. The residence hall staff is trained for supervising, not only in the residence hall but also outside the classroom as mentors.
Enrollment There are between 185 and 225 participants in
Summer
College, with an average of 25 students per program. Many are from New York State, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and
New England. Some come from as far as Florida, Texas, California, and Puerto Rico or internationally from St. Croix, Turkey and the Ukraine. Students come from all socioeconomic levels and ethnic backgrounds. Successful applicants are in good academic standing and demonstrate maturity and self-discipline. Eligibility is determined by completed applications, which include high school transcripts, national test scores, and letters of recommendation. The acting and musical theatre and art and design programs may have additional eligibility requirement.
