SUMMER IN THE ARTS AT NORTHERN Take your skill level in jazz, visual art, or theatre to the next level at one of four summer camps at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. Meets loads of people who enjoy doing the same things you do.
NIU Jazz Camp, Visual Arts Camp, Theatre Arts Camp Senior, and Theatre Arts Camp Junior bring like-minded junior and senior high school students together for a memorable hands-on arts experience.
These intensive camps are for students who take their art seriously and who like to have fun. Camp staff are NIU faculty, students, and alumni. Campers stay in residence halls on campus, eat in university dining halls, and enjoy recreational activities on campus. These popular camps attract a loyal following, with about one third returning to camp the following year.
NIU Jazz Camp (grades *8-12)
July 19 - 24, 2009
Jazz campers audition on the first day and are assigned to combos, big bands, or a percussion ensemble. Campers spend the week in rehearsals, master classes, jam sessions, group lessons, theory and improv classes, and optional private lessons. Campers will see improvement in skills in performance, theory and improvisation. Camp includes daily concerts by faculty and counselors, as well as fun sessions at the university’s
Rec
Center and bowling alley. Camp director Ron Carter is head of the NIU jazz studies area. Final day camper performance!
Visual Arts Camp (grades *8-12) July 19 - 24, 2009 Art campers enjoy two daily in-depth studio sessions from a choice that includes a rich variety of 2-D and 3-D classes. Campers create portfolio-quality work as they work on innovative projects with new materials, techniques, and ideas. Camp includes daily presentations by nationally-known artists, as well as advice on careers and portfolios. Bowling tournament on the final day. NIU art alumna and award-winning art teacher Lynn Stockton directs the camp. Final day camper art show!
Theatre Arts Camp Senior (grades *9-12) July 19 - 24, 2009 Theatre Arts Camp Junior (grades *6-8)July 12 - 17, 2009 Theatre campers perform or crew in the all-camp production. This year's theme is Greek theatre. Campers develop specialized skills through individual coaching, group activities, acting classes, and small classes and labs. Campers choose a different workshop each day. Camp includes a camp talent show and storytelling session. NIU theatre design faculty Melanie Parks is camp director. Final day camper performances!
