Art & Architecture: Summer at Penn The University of Pennsylvania School of Design offers a four-week intensive studio program in art and architecture. Art students choose major courses in animation, drawing, filmmaking, painting, photography or sculpture. In addition, they select two-week projects in ceramic wheel throwing, figure drawing, filmmaking, graphic design, photography, printmaking and book arts, or Web design. Architecture students follow a full-day studio intensive every day and do not study a minor. Working with Penn faculty from around the world, you will build your portfolio, experiment with new disciplines and improve existing skills. 2010 Art & Architecture: Summer at Penn | Ages: 15–18 Located at the University of Pennsylvania 1. July 4–July 31 (4 wks) 2. July 5–July 30 (4 wks) Penn Nursing Summer Institute The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing offers a unique four-week intensive program for rising high school juniors and seniors that features cutting-edge research, the latest advances in virtual learning, and clinical experience in Philadelphia's top hospitals. Working with Penn faculty and classmates from around the world, students will enjoy an innovative classroom curriculum that covers health-care topics such as current epidemics, genetics, bioethics and emergency nursing. Students will then shadow real nurses and observe health care being practiced on every floor and in every department. As the only undergraduate Ivy League nursing school, Penn is recognized worldwide for setting the standard of academic excellence in this field. Working with Penn faculty and classmates from around the world, students will enjoy an innovative classroom curriculum that covers health-care topics such as current epidemics, genetics, bioethics and emergency nursing. 2010 Penn Nursing Summer Institute | Grades: 11–12 Located at the University of Pennsylvania 1. July 4–July 31 (4 wks) WHYY Film Production Academy Come work with the award-winning film and video professionals at Philadelphia’s state-of-the-art public broadcasting station for a complete script-to-screen experience. During our intensive three-week program, you will explore all facets of film production — including scriptwriting, scouting locations in historic Philadelphia, directing, and post-production for your own film. You’ll start with a hands-on introduction to filmmaking, covering all the creative and technical demands of digital story-telling. Next you’ll apply your classroom knowledge as you cultivate your voice and style as a filmmaker and use professional video equipment to develop and produce your short film. The program will conclude in an exciting film festival to showcase your work. WHYY Film Production Academy (Residential) | Ages: 15–18 Located at the University of Pennsylvania 1. July 26–August 13 (3 wks) International Leadership with Model UN If you are just getting interested in world politics or are already a student of global politics, our International Leadership Summer Program at the University of Pennsylvania with Model United Nations will increase your experience, knowledge and skills in this fascinating arena. Living and working with students from around the world, you will gain a unique perspective on international affairs and how to achieve solutions through diplomacy. International Leadership with Model UN will introduce you to the exciting field of global politics and equip you with the essential skills needed for future leadership. Our creative approach blends world history, current events and leadership training to help you understand international relations on an advanced level. Your four-week session of workshops and simulations will feature guest speakers, including international dignitaries, members of foreign embassies and authorities in the field. International Leadership with Model UN | Ages: 15–18 Located at the University of Pennsylvania 1. June 27–July 24 (4 weeks) Summer Internships in Philadelphia Summer Internships in Philadelphia gives you the opportunity to explore work in a chosen field and life on campus at the University of Pennsylvania, your home for the session. A Julian Krinsky summer internship will let you explore your career interests, gather important references for college, make lifelong friends, and gain a sense of independence and responsibility. This is your chance to find out what professional life is all about. It lets you work in the business so you can decide — based on your experience — whether you want to spend your college years preparing for it. Depending on your chosen field, you will spend several fascinating weeks working in an office, lab, studio, museum, behind the microphone or on the stage. You might be interning with a lawyer, marketing a product, shadowing a doctor, assisting a vet, or involved with high-profile industries such as sports management, fashion, entertainment, research, cooking and more. This is your chance to explore, discover and experience professional life firsthand, in a fast-paced, educational, fun environment.
