GREEK SUMMER participants come to know Greece by living with a Greek family in a rural village and dedicating themselves to completing a community service project. They discover the history and context of western civilization while visiting the sites of Ancient Greece. They realize the accomplishment of reaching the peak of Mt. Olympus. And along the journey, they form lifelong bonds with all who have shared these common experiences. Through GREEK SUMMER, young people undergo an intellectual, physical and spiritual metamorphosis, leading participants to realize new potentials.
The American Farm School has built a long tradition of helping Greek villagers meet their evolving needs. Every year, GREEK SUMMER lives in a different village and completes a work project, usually involving the construction of a road, park or town square. At the end of the summer, participants leave with the sense of accomplishment of having helped a community. And even more importantly, through the project, participants leave a part of themselves in a village that has become their own.
