The New Zealand/Fiji program successfully combines meaningful environmental and community service projects, cultural exchange, beautiful surroundings, and fun, exciting adventure activities in two countries. New Zealand is a country of rare seismic beauty: glacial mountains, fast-flowing rivers, deep, clear lakes, abundant forest reserves, and long, deserted beaches. Our two and one-half week stay in New Zealand will take place in the province of Northland and the central North Island.

Aroha Island (11 days) - Here we will work with local volunteers on an ecological reserve located on Aroha Island. Our projects involve construction and conservation work, planting trees, and rebuilding habitat for New Zealand's endangered national bird, the ‘Kiwi.’ Accommodations are conveniently located within the reserve. Comfortable cottages will provide our end-of-the-day resting place; the call of the Kiwi and the sound of lapping waves will soothe you to sleep after a rewarding day’s work. When we are not working, we will be enjoying New Zealand’s incredible beauty. We will take day trips to Northland’s awe-inspiring Ancient Kauri Forest; Cape Reinga, New Zealand’s northern tip; and the place where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea meet.

Maori Community (3 days) -
After we bid farewell to our island home, we’ll move to another Northland location where we will live and work on a Marae, the traditional home of the Maori (NZ's indigenous people). The local community will welcome us, sharing through story the rich history and culture of native New Zealand.

C
entral North Island (4 days) – From the Northland region, our group will travel to the geothermal wonderland of the central North Island and explore the world-renowned Waitomo Caves. Outdoor pursuit centers will provide us with safe, professional guidance on activities such as: high ropes courses, sea kayaking, Dolphin/Whale-watching cruises, caving, and rock climbing.

F
iji Islands (8 days) - Although it will be a sad farewell as we board our flight out, our eyes will remain wide with excitement and anticipation as we head towards the sandy beaches of the Fiji Islands. After our short flight to Fiji, we will travel to a remote coastal village: a true paradise in the Pacific, complete with volcanic mountains, coral reefs, waterfalls, and friendly people. We will essentially become part of this coastal community, living and working at the relaxed pace of "Fiji-time."

After a formal "sevu sevu" welcoming ceremony, the village will open its heart and homes to us. Working side by side with our Fijian friends, we will plant fruit and firewood trees that will serve as a great resource for future generations of the community. During our days here, we will work on projects, learn about local customs, and participate in adventure activities such as SCUBA diving! Your stay in Fiji will provide you with the extraordinary experience of living a ‘communal village lifestyle.’ This unique opportunity is one that could quickly be lost due to the inevitable changes that
are occurring throughout the world in tribal cultures. Join us for a truly enriching experience!
