This two-week creative writing program is designed for 10th-12th graders to support their imaginative writing across literary genres. Students choose a focus of Poetry, Fiction, Non-fiction, or play-writing and participate in other writing labs and workshops to introduce contemporary and non-traditional writing techniques.
What makes this program distinctive?
- Located in Literary San Francisco Bay Area! Students will have the opportunity to stroll along the Berkeley poetry walk, visit the birthplace of the Beat Poets in San Francisco, discover Jack London Square, and read Ohlone Poetry! They will participate in coffee house poetry nights, attend author signings and readings, and get involved in the city’s robust and inimitable literary life.
- Curricular emphasis We will focus on expressive writing as a process, rather than in rules or formulas. Students will discover and refine their own voices!
- Critical Reading Exercises We won't just write, but will read professional writings as well to enhance these student writers' understanding and growth.
- Submission Seminars To help students ready their work for professional submission to youth publications, such as The Claremont Review, The Writer's Slate, Stone Soup and Teen Ink.
Students elect a major focus area called a Writer's Block. In each Writer's Block, they will read classic and contemporary examples of the genre, craft and hone their writing, and prepare to present their piece to an audience of readers and listeners. This year's Writer's Blocks include:
- Short and Sweet: A Short Story Seminar
- Well-Versed: A Poetry Seminar
- The 'Wright Stuff': A Playwright's Seminar
- The Real Word: A Nonfiction Seminar
*Applicants must submit two creative writing samples that demonstrate their potential as writers.
