California Actors Workshop is designed to give young actors training in several different acting skills: basic acting technique, voice, movement and improvisation. Our goal is to push young actors in new directions by exposing them to acting skills often neglected in school-year programs. Through our core curriculum and unique theater electives, campers gain the fundamental tools for developing character depth.
Students will expand their vocal, physical, and emotional range, while experimenting with new performance methods and techniques. All students attend a morning class in Acting Technique, which offers intensive study with one instructor for the duration of the workshop and combines a variety of exercises. In the afternoons, students take classes in voice, movement, and improvisation as well as electives such as Directing, Theory, Auditioning, and Mask-making.
As an integral part of learning acting techniques is watching other actors, we take several trips to local theaters such as ACT and Berkeley Rep to see professional performances. Each of these trips will be followed by a discussion of the production, and some are preceded by an introductory session as well.
