Since 1921, Cheley Colorado Camps has welcomed more than 50,000 young people from every state and more than a dozen countries, including many second, third and now fourth generation Cheley campers. Families choose Cheley because they know they can expect an experience of exceptional richness, quality and consistency in a community that celebrates the individual interests and needs of each participant.
Horseback Riding Cheley Colorado Camps owns a string of 146 horses. Cheley has one of the strongest western riding programs in the country. Some days are spent in the ring working on form, skills, and control while other days are spent on the trail headed for a beautiful destination. We also have overnight horseback trips of two to four days.
Hiking Our program is designed to make novice hikers comfortable and to provide plenty of challenge for advanced hikers. With hikes to alpine lakes, beautiful meadows, and majestic peaks, each day is an adventure. Our hiking program does not just focus on reaching your destination, though. Our goal is to equip campers with skills to survive and thrive in the outdoors.
Backpacking Few experiences provide more memories than backpacking. You put everything you need for two to five days in a backpack and head into the backcountry. You wake up to the glow of a mountain sunrise and cook a hot breakfast, then spend a day on the trail without seeing another group. The views you encounter and the accomplishments you achieve are some that many people never have the opportunity to experience. Our backpacks will range from two days to a five-day backpack. You will not only learn how to effectively pack your pack, but how to care for your equipment (tents, stoves, etc.) and how to survive in the backcountry. There is a sense of independence that comes with knowing you can head into the wilderness with everything you need and survive without assistance.
Sports We have great equipment and facilities for our non-competitive sports program. Each camp unit has a basketball hoop and access to one of the most beautiful grass playing fields in the country. Each unit has a designated sports counselor who plans fun times for all who choose sports that day. You'll have a good time playing ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee golf, soccer, volleyball or croquet. We also do aerobics, running, relays, games, challenge course, dance or yoga.
Riflery & Archery Our target sports concentrate on safety while teaching participants to focus, breathe, and concentrate. We have .22 caliber and air rifles, plus archery ranges. Campers learn form and technique and work to earn skills-based recognition in each specialty.
River Rafting Campers head to the Poudre River outside Ft. Collins for a day of rafting. Each raft has 8 to 10 campers, accompanied by a qualified guide. It is a great way to cool off during the warm summer days. And don't be surprised if a water fight breaks out between rafts.
Technical Climbing Estes Park is blessed with some great climbing sites. From Christmas Tree Rock to Lily Mountain, there are tons of options for any ability. You will usually start by climbing routes on Cheley property and some of you will finish the summer climbing at Lily Mountain. From Lily Mountain, there's a great view of Long's Peak and Meeker, and a view of the whole Estes Park Valley. Our technical climbing program includes climbing, belaying, rappelling and a chance to experience a Tyrolean traverse.
