Live on a private island
At Canoe Island French Camp, live and explore your own 47-acre island.  Days are filled with new friends and exciting activities, all with a French flair. At night, lay on the dock and look deep into the dark sky to see more stars than you ever thought possible. From your tipi listen to a harbor seal splashing, tree frogs calling from the lake, or giggling from the next tipi.

Nestled in the “rain shadow” of the Olympic Mountains, between Shaw and Lopez islands, Canoe Island enjoys a sunny, mild climate common to the San Juan Islands. Whales, dolphins, seals, and sea birds are frequent sightings on the wildlife cruise, bald eagles, great blue herons, sea stars, anemones and river otter make their homes on the island’s shores.

Customize your camp experience
With approximately 40 campers, ages 9-16, on the island, you can choose what sort of program you want: theatrical and artistic, athletic and adventuresome or a combination.  Make a fantastic mask for the masquerade ball, bake a tarte aux pommes or crème brulée, safely rapelle down to the ocean’s edge, or kayak to an island beach.

Each session focuses on a French historical theme: During La Révolution Française, storm La Bastille, search the island for Marie-Antoinette and King Louis XVI, and sing La Marseillaise as you take part in the 4th of July Parade on Orcas Island. Enter the 1800s as a French Voyageur exploring island shores by canoe, holding a Northwest Indian potlatch, and forming your own settlement.  In Les Chevaliers be a knight following clues across the island to find the Holy Grail, and use a trebuchet to bombard a “fortress”.  In Le Tour du Monde, investigate other Francophone countries by trying African and Vietnamese cuisine, playing Caribbean and Cajun music, and participating in Les Jeux Olympique and a World’s Fair of culture, food, music, and sports.

Make lifelong friends
With only four campers and a counselor per tipi you will enjoy close camaraderie with your tipi mates.  Campers often return for the same session each year to see the friends they made over the years.  Your counselors, many of whom are from France or other Francophone countries, will share their culture, food, and history with you.  Take home memories of new friends and experiences you won’t ever forget.

Arrive with ease
Walk on the ferry at Anacortes and meet your counselor at the Orcas Island ferry dock where you will board the camp’s 27’ ferry for the 20-minute trip to Canoe Island.  Or fly to SeaTac Airport near Seattle or the Orcas Island airport where camp staff will meet your flight and bring you to camp.

Be nurtured and well cared for
The Camp Directors have over 20 years of experience running some of the Northwest’s most respected camp programs.  With backgrounds that include paramedic and EMT training, teacher certification, journalism, science education, and French language and travel, they meet parents’ criteria for safety, knowledge, and experience.

Certified, CPR-trained lifeguards lead all swimming and boating activities. Counselors are at least 18 and have had at least a year of college and are fluent French speakers.  Our registered nurses oversee all aspects of camp health and hygiene, and our gourmet chef serves delicious and nutritious meals. Paramedic services and physician-staffed medical clinics are available within 15 minutes on the major, ferry-served islands, and area hospitals are 20 minutes away via medivac helicopter. Background checks are prerequisite for all staff positions.

Canoe Island French Camp has helped young people to appreciate the wonders of the forest, the sky, and the water - the living environment - while getting to know other intellectually curious campers from around the world since 1969.

Speak French
Don’t be afraid that your French speaking ability won’t be adequate or will be too good. By the first dinner you will be asking for the milk by saying, “Puis-j’avoir du lait”.  Les débutants play games to learn French basics, while les étudiants avancés put on French plays and write fun stories and poems for L’Observatoire, the camp journal that each camper takes home.  Your counselors will make speaking French fun during meals, activities and class time at your unique level.

Enjoy a world-class camp facility
The unique architecture and ambiance of Canoe Island French Camp make a comfortable setting for your two- to three-week stay. The stone water tower was modeled after a French dovecote and the theater patterned after a Native American longhouse. The heated swimming pool, tennis court, grass volleyball court/sports field, Le Ritz game room with ping pong and babyfoot (foosball), library, dining hall, more than two miles of trails through pristine forests, and breath-taking sunsets over neighboring islands are waiting for you.

Programs for groups
Canoe Island is available for use by schools, groups, businesses, and families that are interested in having high quality residential or day-only education programs or retreats with a French-related focus for up to 40 participants.

Accredited
Canoe Island French Camp is accredited by the American Camp Association and is a member of the Western Association of Independent Camps, which means we meet the highest standards in the camping field.

Comments from our 2007 Camper Parents

To tell you the truth, they just never stopped talking how great camp was Victoria must have told half of Queens by now, I reckon she would be a good sales lady! Seriously, though, of all the camps they have attended over the years, their experience at Camp Canoe was by far the most rewarding. They raved about the counselors, the food, sleeping by the dock, canoeing, and the list goes on and on. They have already told me they want to go back next year! Una Neville, Flushing NY

My kids were ECSTATIC with their time at the camp, and by the way you can (and I mean this) already sign them up for the first session next year. They insist that they are going again next year and it has to be the same week as they made a deal with their new friends to meet again, same time, same place. And they are trying to round up some of their local SF Bay Area friends. Bottom line, this was the best experience of their summer, and by far the best camp experience of their lives. Keep enjoying your time there you have something special for sure. Sophie Hahn, Berkeley, CA

Despite himself, Connor enjoyed the French theme of the camp (he had initial misgivings about going to an academic camp during his summer vacation). It provided something in common with the other students that made the experience more fulfilling. Linda Logan, Bellevue, WA
