Allegheny Riding Camp is a girls' residential summer program located at the Grier School in Central Pennsylvania. We teach all levels of English (hunter/jumper) horseback riding. Campers have 2 riding lessons per day and an hour of equine studies each day. In a 3-week session, a camper is scheduled for 26 horseback riding lessons. All campers participate in a camp horse show at the end of each session.
Campers also have the opportunities to participate in a variety of other traditional camp activities such as dance, art, drama, swimming, camping, and sports. Our sessions are 3 weeks in duration, with a special mother-daughter weekend and 6-day rookie session for young campers.
We also offer a special Show Camper program for experienced riders aged 12 to 16. Qualified campers are assigned a specific show horse and travel to rated horse shows while they attend camp. Riding internships are available for qualified girls who have completed 11th grade.
Our mother-daughter session is a great way to introduce camp to young girls who might not be ready to attend camp on their own yet. (And for moms who aren't quite ready to part with their daughters!)
Our Counselor in Training program teaches girls aged 16-17 the fundamentals of becoming a camp counselor.
Allegheny Riding Camp is an offshoot of the Grier School, a private boarding school for girls, established in 1853. Facilities include dormitory housing, four riding paddocks, stables for 50 horses, 25-yard outdoor swimming pool, air-conditioned dance studio, art studios, gymnasium, and 350 acres of beautiful wooded mountainside.
The goals of Allegheny Riding Camp are to build self-confidence, foster independence, care for horses, and value community.
Our camp director and riding directors are employed at the Grier School year round and we invite you to visit or call with questions. We hope to see you this summer!
